CAGAYAN – Elements of the Explosive Ordnance Division of the Cagayan police recovered a live mortar round in a junkshop in Barangay Consolacion, Cagayan De Oro on Tuesday.

According to junkshop owner Prudencia Durano, a scrap seller took the mortar to her shop, but she refused to buy it for fear of her family’s safety.

“Tinanggihan ko baka kasi sumabog, marami pa naman kami dito kanina. Dun lang sya sa labas, di ko pinapasok,” Durano said.

The mortar, EOD confirmed, is an 81mm illumination mortar round, probably a remnant of World War II. Although it had no pin, it is very active and can explode up to a 2-kilometer radius, according to EOD chief Supt. Aaron Mandia.

It was learned that the mortar was dug up by children near the Cagayan de Oro River.

EOD personnel put the mortar in a pail of water.

“Kailangan talaga nasa tubig kasi kapag nainitan, pwedeng sumabog,” Mandia said.
