MANILA -- The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a man for allegedly faking the signature of Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu for bogus government projects.
The suspect, Datu Sinsuat Mama, and a female companion were arrested in an entrapment operation.
According to a complaint from a textbook supplier, Mama introduced himself as a representative from the office of Mangudadatu, and asked for P20,000 as downpayment for an educational project worth P85 million.
Using the documents shown to the NBI and to Mangudadatu, it was proven that Mama's signature is fake.
Mangudadatu arrived at the scene and confronted Mama.
Two men punched Mama while he was being escorted by the police. When asked, the men said they were also cheated by the suspected.
They were also arrested by the NBI for attacking Mama, who sustained wounds in his eyebrow.
He denied the allegations.
The NBI found out that the suspect is a distant relative of the governor, who said that he was also victimized by Mama while he was still mayor.
Charges of estafa and falsification of public documents will be filed against Mama and his companion.
