MANILA (UPDATED) -- A barangay chairman and his wife were killed while two others were wounded after the vehicle they were riding exploded in Laurel, Batangas late evening on Friday, police said.

The fatalities were identified as Nestor Rodriguez, chairman of Barangay Buso-buso, and his wife Josebia.

Former barangay councilor and now tanod Jaime Sarmiento and his brother, businessman Maximo, were wounded in the explosion.

Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by a fragmentation grenade.

Police said the victims were on their way home from the house of Laurel, Batangas Mayor Randy James Amo when their L200 van suddenly exploded at around 11:15 p.m.

They were immediately brought to the Mercado Medical Center in Tanauan City.

Rodriguez and his wife, however, succumbed to their wounds while undergoing treatment.

Police are still investigating if politics was the motive behind the attack.

The suspects have yet to be identified. -- Report from Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN News Southern Tagalog
