BATANGAS – A barangay captain was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman in Laurel town on Monday evening, police said.

Senior Inspector Philip Aguilar, Laurel Police chief, identified the victim as Chairman Roberto Garcia of Barangay Molinete, Laurel, Batangas.

Garcia just came from a basketball game in the neighboring town of Balete and was on his way home onboard his motorcycle when he was ambushed by the suspect in Barangay Molinete at around 10:30 p.m.

Garcia, 68, died on the spot after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds from an M16 rifle.

Police said the suspect fled on foot after the shooting.

Although the motive behind the killing is not yet clear, investigators said they have already gathered leads.

Batangas Police Director Senior Superintendent Omega Jireh Fidel has formed the Special Investigation Task Group-Molinete to handle the case.
