COTABATO CITY -- Three police escorts of the mayor of President Roxas, North Cotabato were wounded after a landmine exploded while their convoy was passing through Barangay Datu Inda, President Roxas on Thursday.
The victims, who were escorts of President Roxas Mayor Jaime Mahimpit, were rushed to a hospital in North Cotabato for treatment.
Mahimpit was unharmed in the explosion, which occurred past 3 p.m.
Authorities suspect the New People's Army (NPA) Front Committee 53 was behind the attack.
Police said that prior to the landmine explosion, the rebel group harassed an army detachment also in Barangay Inda past 9 a.m. on the same day.
Authorities said they received reports about the group's alleged extortion activities against some residents of President Roxas, Magpet and Makilala in North Cotabato.
Police and military have beefed up security in areas where there are imminent threats from the NPA.
