MANILA – A fire hit a building inside the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, North Cotabato early on Wednesday.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Kabacan said about 60% of the building was destroyed by the fire that started at around 1 a.m.

Authorities estimated the cost of damage at P3 million.

USM President Dr. Francisco Garcia believes the fire was just an accident and it had nothing to do with an explosion and an attempted arson in the campus weeks ago.

"I passed by the area around 9 pm. Medyo madilim doon [USM]. So what I'm thinking is short circuit 'yung cause ng fire. And besides, kung sinadya 'yun, eh, the gates were closed naman," Dr. Garcia said.

He said the administration of USM has already tightened security around the campus.

Meanwhile, the BFP is still investigating the cause of the fire.—report from Arianne Apatan, ABS-CBN Central Mindanao
