CEBU -- A vessel carrying 160 passengers ran aground at Lawis Ledge in Talisay City, Cebu on Thursday evening.

The M/V Weesam Express 7 left Ormoc City at 2:30 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Cebu City at 7 p.m.

However, the Philippine Coast Guard said the vessel encountered big waves at the Mactan Channel and therefore decided to change course via Lawis Ledge, where it ran aground at 6:40 p.m.

All passengers of the ship were rescued and transferred to its sister ship, Weesam 8. They were also given food at the pier.

Lawis Ledge is the same area where M/V St. Thomas Aquinas sank in August last year.

Meanwhile, another vessel bound for Catbalogan, Samar, the M/V Blessed Star of Roble Shipping Lines, went back to Pier 4 in Cebu City due to strong waves.

The vessel carrying 84 passengers left the port at 7 p.m. and arrived back in pier 4 past 12 midnight.
