CEBU – Two workers died of suffocation while two of their companions are now in serious condition after cleaning a manhole in a drainage near the public market in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City Thursday afternoon.
A Bayan Patroller was able to capture in video the moment when the fatalities, identified as cousins Brendon and Romeo Cabanes, were taken out of the manhole. Their co-workers Winston Campo and Lemuel Macaraya, meanwhile, were taken to a nearby hospital.
Officials are still investigating what caused the two victims to suffocate.
Talisay City Mayor Johnny de los Reyes clarified that the four were not job order employees of the city hall but were merely tasked by the city's engineering department to clean the 12-foot drainage near the public market.
De los Reyes, meanwhile, promised the victims’ families that the city will help in the burial of the two victims.
