MANILA, Philippines – Cavite police confirmed Thursday that the gunmen who snatched 3 Chinese inmates helped them escape.

Supt. Romeo Desiderio, spokesperson of the Cavite police, said investigations show that Li Tian Hua, Wang Li Na and Li Lan Yan alias "Jackson Dy" are not victims of a kidnap-for-ransom gang.

Investigations also show that Jackson Dy paid a robbery gang a large sum of money to help them escape.

Several suspects involved in the rescue were arrested Thursday night.

Hot pursuit operations against the other suspects are ongoing.

"Tuluy-tuloy ito, hanggang ngayon nandodoon ang tracking team natin sa field na naghahanap sa mga suspek," said Desiderio.

Around 15 to 20 suspects are being hunted down.

A special investigation task group, meanwhile, has been formed to investigate how the 3 were taken from the custody of their jail guards in Barangay Lapidalio in Trece Martires.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is also now on alert for their possible exit from the country.

However, authorities said there is also a big possibility that the inmates are still in the country.

The three are facing charges for violations of the Dangerous Drugs Act. -- with reports from Pia Gutierrez, Maan Macapagal and Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
