MANILA (UPDATE) – At least 7 people died after a bus collided with a 14-wheeler truck along Marcos Highway in Barangay Badiwan, Tuba, Benguet Thursday evening.
Police said the bus, carrying some 40 people, was traversing a downward portion of the highway when it collided with an approaching truck at around 10 p.m.
The fatalities were identified as bus driver Leopoldo Lana, Diana Laoria, Carlo Boyet Pintor, Princess Pastorpite, Jennylyn Lauturia and a certain Maricel. They all died on the spot.
A seventh victim, Marvin Platino, was declared dead on arrival at the Baguio General Hospital.
Authorities said the bus passengers, mostly tourism students of Marinduque State College, had just come from a field trip in Baguio when the accident occurred.
The 33 injured victims are now recovering in the hospital. The truck driver, meanwhile, survived the crash.
Dr. Ludegario Halos, Vice President for Academic Affairs of MSC, said the institution is doing all it can to accommodate the needs of the victims and families of the fatalities.
"Ikinalulungkot namin ang nasabing pangyayari at sa ngayon ay gumagawa na ng hakbang ang pamunuan ng Marinduque State College upang akuin ang mga responsibilidad na masasabing aming pananagutan," he said.
"Sa kasalakuyan ay aming inihahanda ang pangangailangang pinansyal at moral [ng mga apektado]. Kami ay nakatakdang tumungo sa Baguio para personal na asikuasuhin ang mga mag-aaral." – reports from Armenio Supang and Ricky Velasco, dzMM
