MANILA -- The bus driver of the ill-fated G.V. Florida Transport bus involved in the Bontoc accident last week that killed 15 people and left 32 injured is now behind bars.
Edgar Renon has been detained at the Mt. Province District Jail. He was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and serious physical injuries.
Renon said that the charges are unfair, claiming he did everything he could to prevent the accident from happening.
"Hindi naman tama iyun. Hindi ko naman sinasadya iyung nagyari, ginawa ko naman lahat," he said.
However, engineers from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Mt. Province believe that the driver was at fault, due to the skid marks that they found on the road.
"Pilit nyang binubuhay iyung makina nun kaya may mga skid marks. Dapat ibinangga niya na lang sa gilid. Sa isang kilometro na yun di nya nagawa," said Engr. Wilbur Likigan of DPWH.
Renon claimed that he lost control of the bus after the brakes failed. One of the tires burst after it got caught in a gutter before the bus fell off the ravine.
The police believe that Renon was speeding. According to investigations, the braking system of the bus was used but it still failed, meaning that the bus was running at high speeds.
Meanwhile, 11 passengers of the bus are still being treated at the hospital.
Renon told the families of the wounded and the dead that he is sorry about the incident. -- report from Mae Cornes, ABS-CBN News North Luzon
