ILOILO -- Six classrooms and the library of the St. Candida School Colegio de las Hijas de Jesus in Estancia town were razed by fire on Tuesday, damaging P2 million worth of equipment and infrastructure, reports said.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the one-hour blaze, which originated from the library, quickly spread to adjacent rooms.

Fire officials said they are still investigating what may have caused the fire, but school officials said a short circuit may have started the blaze.

The burned structure, they said, was where students have been holding classes after their main building was destroyed by Yolanda last year.

School officials said they might put up tents as improvised classrooms for the students.

Meanwhile, part of a house of the Bernal family from the area was damaged when it was accidentally hit by the fire truck which just responded from the school fire.

The truck was supposed to fetch more water when it encountered mechanical problems, according to the house owner Victoria Bernal.

No one was hurt from the Bernal family, but the truck’s windshield was damaged.

Residents however expressed dismay that the vehicle is out of commission, as the town of Estancia only has one fire truck, which also responds to fires in nearby Carles and Balasan towns.
