MANILA -- A 30-day preventive suspension is imposed on bus companies involved in deadly accidents as a precaution, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said Monday.

In an interview with dzMM, LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez said the operation of bus companies is suspended while authorities determine the road worthiness and safety of bus units.

"Ginagawa po natin ito para malaman kung alin ang legal at iligal na ginagawa pa nila," he said.

Ginez said the policy is in accordance with the 1936 Public Safety Law.

After the suspension, the LTFRB will decide whether to cancel, suspend, or revoke the franchise of the bus company.

LTFRB: Florida bus' engine, chassis tampered

This, as the LTFRB found out that GV Florida Transport, which was involved in an accident that killed 14 people and left 32 others wounded, committed several violations.

The LTFRB said 10 Florida bus units, including the one that figured in the Bontoc accident, were registered under Mt. Province Cable Tours owned by Norberto Que Sr.

It said no application for approval of sale and transfer was filed by Que in favor of Florida Transport.

The ill-fated unit had a Florida body marking, but its plate number was assigned to Mt. Province Cable Tours.

The chassis and engine of the Florida bus were also tampered and not registered with the Land Transportation Office (LTO), the LTFRB said.

Ginez added that he will call on all owners of bus companies and invite them to a transportation summit, wherein the agency will explain its safety and road worthiness programs for 2014 and 2015.

"Lahat po ng decision-makers kasama sa summit para po maintindihan nila lahat ng programa," he added.

Meanwhile, Ginez said that he already contacted insurance companies such as the Passenger Accident Management and Insurance Agency, Inc. (PAMI) to ask them to immediately provide for the needs of the victims.

He said they have received a formal complaint from the wife of comedian Tado Jimenez who died in the Bontoc accident.

Ginez assured that his office will do everything it can to help all the victims of the accident. - report from Rose Carmelle Lacuata, ABS-CBNNews.com
