MANILA, Philippines – Various groups from Ilocos Sur held a rally on Saturday to express their disapproval of the black sand mining operations in their province.
Spearheaded by the Catholic Church, the protesters marched from the plaza up to the province’s poblacion area carrying placards showing objections against the activity.
After the protest, an interfaith unity prayer was held. Various religious groups also prayed over the prominent personalities behind the operations.
According to student Jastoni Corpuz, he joined the prayer rally because he wants his opinion against mining to be heard, knowing that it has bad environmental effects.
Reverend Ernesto Salgado of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia thanked everyone who supported their cause. – from a report by Ria Galiste, ABS-CBN News Ilocos
