BACOLOD CITY -- Two women died, while 11 were injured after a truck containing assorted agricultural crops fell on its left side due to brake malfunction, along the road of Brgy. Cabcab, in the town of Isabela in Negros Occidental Saturday afternoon.
Evangeline Francisco, 60, and her sister, Hylen Sicon, 45, died on the spot. Francisco's head was crushed on the railings of the truck, while Sicon's body was found covered by assorted crops by Isabela police.
The truck driver, Cezar Oropel, who is now detained at the Isabela police station, said the truck's brakes malfunctioned as he was traversing downhill in Brgy. Cabcab. He intended to stop the truck by hitting a big stone but the truck fell on its side instead.
Eleven of the passengers were immediately brought to Ignacio Arroyo Memorial District Hospital in Isabela. Three passengers have been released, while the rest were transferred to the regional hospital in Bacolod City.
The victims were usual passengers of the Orope'l-operated cargo truck, which was carrying assorted agricultural crops from the mountainous barangays of Isabela bound for Bacolod City.
Most of the victims sustained fractures in different parts of their bodies.
