MANILA – Cops rescued an 8-year-old boy who was held hostage by a man who had a mental breakdown in Kawit, Cavite on Thursday night.
Authorities said the suspect, William Villanueva, entered the house of victim, Clyde Ivan Reyes, in Barangay Samala-Marquez at around 5 p.m.
For no apparent reason, the suspect suddenly held the boy hostage using a knife while the other members of the family managed to escape.
After more than 5 hours of negotiation without any response from the hostage-taker, members of Kawit police decided to shoot the suspect dead.
Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla, who led the negotiations, believes that the suspect had a nervous breakdown.
"Lumalabas na psychotic breakdown na 'yung suspect e. Sa four hours na negotiation, walang response na kahit ano. Binigyan namin ng pagkain, ayaw kunin. Binigyan namin ng gamot, ayaw kunin. Nung huling picture namin sa kanya, tinakpan na niya ng una yung bata at tinutok na talaga ('yung kutsilyo). Ano na 'yun, clear and present danger at kailangan umaksyon na talaga," he said.
Witnesses said the suspect was not from the area and was just visiting a relative there.
They also said the suspect looked dirty and weary when he entered the victim's house.
Meanwhile, the 8-year-old sustained no injuries after he was held hostage for more than 5 hours. The boy was brought to a nearby hospital.—report from Raffy Santos, ABS-CBN News
