MANILA -- A man was arrested after plants believed to be marijuana were found in his family's yard in Binalonan, Pangasinan, police said Tuesday.

Police said the suspect's mother sought their help about her son's plants.

They were surprised to find what are believed to be marijuana seedlings in the family's yard.

The suspect's mother previously reported her son to authorities for stealing a sack of rice.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, had been brought to rehabilitation centers several times.

He claimed that the marijuana plant can cure stomach illnesses.

Police urged the suspect's neighbors to report any incident of selling and using illegal drugs in the area. -- report from John Germono, ABS-CBN News North Central Luzon
