'Suwang' carjackers nabbed in Davao City

DAVAO CITY -- Police arrested 4 alleged carjackers during an operation conducted last Saturday in Davao City.

Agents of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Region XI (CIDG XI) nabbed the suspected members of the "Suwang Carnapping Syndicate" syndicate at Brgy. Sirawan, Toril, Davao City at around 11:50 pm last Saturday.

Police said this syndicate is responsible for several carjacking incidents in Davao del Sur and neighboring provinces in the region.

Arrested members were identified as Joel Manulat, alias "Suwang," the criminal gang leader, Jimmy Cuico, Nappy Bontilao, and Charlie Naul.

Several stolen motorcycles were seized from their possession such as a Honda XLR 200, Honda XRM 110, Honda Wave and Motor Star 110. Two caliber .357 revolver and 6 live ammunition were also recovered from the group's leader.

"They have been monitored since early last year and is known for their modus operandi of stealing the vehicle while it is parked. We can still recall that last year, carnapping incidents in different provinces and cities in the region reached an alarming level. Statistics registered more than 200 carnapped motorcycles in Davao del Sur alone," said CIDG-XI Chief Joel C. Pernito.

The group will be charged with violation of R.A 10591, or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunitions, and R.A. 6539, or the Anti-Carnapping Law.
