MANILA, Philippines – Suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) burned down an 18-wheeler truck along Sitio Sawogan, Brgy. Salvacion in Surigao del Sur on Friday morning.
Reports said the alleged NPA rebels led by a certain Ka Jing intercepted and opened fire at the truck, which was carrying a container van.
Because of fear, truck driver Jovy Samarca jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran away from the area.
Investigations said the rebels then spilled gasoline all over the truck and burned it down. The truck was reportedly owned by a contractor of Dole Philippines.
Authorities believe the rebels retaliated for the firm's failure to pay revolutionary taxes.
Meanwhile, the Surigao del Sur Provincial Police Office immediately gave a directive to neighboring police stations to implement a stricter intelligence monitoring especially on incidents involving NPA members.
A composite team of the Philippine National Police and the 29th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army has been organized to conduct operations against rebels in the area. – from a report by Charmane Awitan, ABS-CBN News Caraga
