CEBU CITY - Heavy rains brought about by tropical storm "Basyang" triggered massive flooding in low-lying areas of metro Cebu.

Hundreds of residents from the coastal villages of Talisay, Naga and Lapu-lapu were advised to evacuate at 7 p.m. Friday due to a storm surge advisory.

In Naga City, more than 81 residents sought temporary shelter at the Naga Central School, while in Talisay and Mactan, families evacuated to the barangay hall and gym.

Meanwhile, Mahiga creek in Mabolo overflowed, leaving vehicles submerged in knee-high flood waters.

The city also experienced a brownout due to destroyed power lines.

At least 14 city government buses were on standby outside the command post for possible massive evacuation of residents.

The city disaster risk reduction management council prepared five evacuation areas: Kalunasan gym, Warwick barracks, SRP tent city, Tisa elementary school, and Busay barangay hall.
