MANILA -- Four current and former members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Sarangani were convicted to life imprisonment Thursday by the Sandiganbayan First Division for malversation of public funds in 2002.

Convicted for malversation through falsification of public documents were Board Members Cornelio Martinez Jr. and Eugene Alzate, and former provincial board members Redempto Abiso and Jesus Desedilla.

The four officials were found guilty of faking documents to use the P475,000 Countrywide Development Fund of former Rep. Erwin Chiongbian.

They used the money for a wedding, court records show.

The Sandiganbayan also ordered the arrest of other members of the Sarangani Provincial Board involved in the case.

After the promulgation, the four officials were taken to Muntinlupa where they will serve their sentence. - -- Reports from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
