2 suspected NPA rebels killed in Sorsogon

MANILA -- Two suspected rebels of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with military forces in Gubat, Sorsogon Thursday morning, authorities said.

One of the fatalities was identified as Richie Espinida, also known as Ka Bilog. He was allegedly a collector of revolutionary taxes.

Authorities said they received text messages from residents of Gubat, saying that suspicious armed men were in their area.

Military troops immediately responded to the area and followed the armed men.

Upon reaching Barangay Carriedo, the suspected NPA rebels suddenly fired shots, resulting in a gun battle which lasted for about ten minutes.

Two government soldiers, identified as Private First Class (PFC) Louie Lumbang and Corporal Alfredo Durana, were also hurt in the incident. -- Report from Thea Omelan, ABS-CBN News Bicol
