MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) -- Lawless elements strafed an Army truck carrying elements of the 18th Infantry Batallion of the Philippine Army in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, a radio dzMM report said.

Col. Rodrigo Gregorio of the Western Mindanao Command public information office said seven soldiers were wounded in the attack.

The injured soldiers were brought to Camp Navarro General Hospital.

The soldiers were on their way back to their headquarters in Barangay Bohe Suyak in Ungkaya Pukan when they were ambushed by a still unidentified number of suspected Abu Sayyaf Group members near Barangays Amaloy and Bohe Pahu.

Gregorio said the attack led to a gunfight between the lawless elements and the soldiers. The firefight lasted for about 20 minutes, he added. -- With reports from Edwin Sevidal, dzMM; RJ Rosalado, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
