MANILA, Philippines – Residents of a barangay in Banate, Iloilo participated in a clean-up drive following a rise in dengue cases in the area.
Data from the municipal health office showed that from December 2012 until the second week of January 2013, a total of 54 cases of dengue were reported.
A 5-year-old boy, Kim Oliver Bagorio, died because of the illness.
Authorities are alarmed that if the trend continues, a dengue outbreak could be declared in the area.
Barangay officials have launched anti-dengue programs, including inspections and mosquito control.
They also called on the support of the residents to prevent an outbreak. -- Report from Jenel Baclay, ABS-CBN News Iloilo
