1 killed, 2 hurt in Star Tollway mishap

BATANGAS -- A male grass cutter was killed while two of his co-workers were injured when a wayward car hit them along the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR) Tollway in Malvar town on Friday morning, police said.

Batangas police director Senior Superintendent Omega Jireh Fidel identified the fatality as Mario Atienza, a resident of Barangay Maraouy, Lipa City and employee of Ruth Chedy Industrial Sales and Services.

Injured were Danilo Mosca, 58, resident of Barangay Tangway, Lipa City and Bryan Lalog, 21 , resident of Barangay San Salvador, Lipa City.

According to the police report, a southbound Toyota Vios (ZAN-778) driven by Leoncio Macadama, 59, of Bacoor, Cavite was cruising along the highway of Barangay Poblacion, Malvar town, when he tried to overtake another vehicle then lost control of the steering wheel and swerved towards the center island around 11:20 a.m.

Subsequently, the car hit the three grass cutters who were working at the vicinity of Km 70 + 700, killing Atienza on the spot. Mosca and Lalog were brought to CP Reyes Hospital for treatment.

Police held Macadama at the Malvar police station while charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple physical injuries were being prepared against him.
