MANILA -- A 55-year-old woman died after being run over by a backhoe along Benigno Aquino Avenue in Iloilo City Thursday morning.
The victim was identified as Teresita Jaravilla.
According to investigators, Jaravilla was bringing her grandson to school when she was hit by a backhoe as she was crossing the service road.
Jaravilla died while her grandson survived the incident.
The school's security guard said that the backhoe was moving fast, but the driver, Oscar Rosatasi, said that he did not notice the two crossing the street.
The backhoe, owned by Gio Transport, is used in the road widening project in the area.
There were no warning signals in the area, despite it being a school zone.
Because of the incident, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will inspect the safety measures implemented by the project's contractor.
Meanwhile, the driver may be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to homicide. He is currently detained in Mandurriao Police Station. -- with a report from Nony Basco, ABS-CBN News Iloilo
