NEGROS OCCIDENTAL - A policeman was shot dead in front of beach goers at a resort in Barangay Miranda in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental on Sunday afternoon.
Three of the five gunmen, believed to be members of an organized crime group, shot SPO2 Rex De Los Reyes several times moments after he alighted from his vehicle, investigators said.
Hinigaran Police quickly alerted nearby police stations, resulting in the arrest of the suspects.
The suspects, identified as Vicente Poleros, Eduardo Montano, Openiano Dolar, Michael Jancilan, and Roger Garilba were inside their getaway van when they were intercepted by members of Pontevedra Police in Barangay Camandag in La Castellana town.
Recovered from the suspects' possession were four .45-caliber pistol, a 9-mm pistol owned by the victim, four grenades and various ammunition.
Police records show that De Los Reyes had gone AWOL (absent without leave) after getting implicated in a pawnshop robbery in Aklan. Investigators, however, are also looking into illegal drug trade as another possible reason behind the killing.
