MANILA, Philippines – Temperature in Baguio City dropped to 13.4° Celsius on Saturday after a low of 12° C last Friday, and the chilly weather is attracting tourists from different parts of the country.

But while some are enjoying the cool temperature, other tourists are getting sick.

Geraldine Mabungin, who came all the way from Mindanao, started having cough, colds and fever in December.

The Department of Health in Cordillera said Geraldine has signs of an influenza-like illness.

In 2013, more than 9,000 suffered from influenza-like illness in the region, with most of the cases recorded in Baguio City.

“Tuwing ganito ang panahon, madalas ‘yung influenza-like illness. Sipon, colds. ‘Yung malamig din na air also worsens the condition of those with asthma,” explained Dr. Amelita Pangilinan, assistant regional director of DOH-Cordillera.

Just this month, the DOH has already recorded 200 cases of influenza-like illness in the region. The cold weather also worsens arthritis.
