ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Floodwaters swamped a village in Zamboanga City early Monday, affecting at least 50 families, a local official said.
Heavy rains caused a river in Barangay Putik to swell, prompting the city government to raise an alert.
Mayor Celso Lobregat said the affected residents were not evacuated as floodwaters subsided after an hour.
The local government convened a multi-agency group to attend to the needs of the affected families.
The local government is now looking into the cause of the flashflood, particularly structures along the river that could have blocked the flow of water.
Lobregat said he is willing to go to court to have some structures demolished.
State weather bureau PAGASA said Mindanao is experiencing the tail end of a cold front.
