MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) banned yesterday the burning of rubber tires on streets during the New Year’s Eve revelry.
In a statement, DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said the agency has asked assistance from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local government units to strictly enforce the ban on the burning of rubber tires on roads.
DPWH regional directors and district engineers were also instructed to coordinate with the local officials and the PNP in implementing this regulation.
It has been a practice to burn rubber tires that serve as a bonfire when they welcome the New Year.
Singson said, “We have to prolong the useful life of our roads. Burning of rubber tires on the roadways, especially asphalt road pavements, may damage the roads, hamper the free passage of vehicles and contribute to air pollution.”
