MANILA, Philippines – Police want the law against the manufacture, sales and use of illegal firecrackers strengthened.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the fine of up to P30,000 and the threat of imprisonment of up to one year have not stopped the manufacturers and the public from buying illegal fireworks.

Police also said they would rather put retailers to jail than confiscate their illegal products.

They also suspect that the catchy names of the fireworks such as “Goodbye Bading”, “Ampatuan”, and “Gangnam Boom” are only part of a marketing strategy for the fast sale of the products. -- Reports from Gus Abelgas, ABS-CBN News; ANC
