MANILA (UPDATED) -- Former Quezon City Mayor Ismael "Mel" Mathay Jr. died at the age of 81 on Christmas Day.
The incumbent mayor of the local government, Herbert Bautista, confirmed the news.
Mathay died after he suffered a heart attack, according to his brother, Simplicio Mathay. He was rushed to Medical City but was declared dead on arrival at around 9 a.m.
Mathay's son, Chuck, said his father complained of feeling cold this morning before passing out.
"Kagabi, magkakasama kami, nagkaroon ng dinner, family dinner. Nung nagtapos 'yung family dinner, I left there around 1:30 in the morning, okay naman, wala naman siyang complaint, he was happy," Chuck said.
"This morning, ang sabi when he went down from the room to watch his usual basketball game in the morning, he just stood up and said he was kind of feeling cold, and he walked to the comfort room. When he was about to enter the comfort room, ubo lang siya nang isang beses, then wala na, nag-pass out na," he added.
The wake for Mathay will be held at the Christ the King Parish in Greenmeadows Avenue, Quezon City.
Mathay served as mayor from 1992 to 2001. He also previously served as vice-governor of the Metro Manila Commission, the body that implements the vision of then First Lady Imelda Marcos.
Just this year, he married his long-time partner, Vilma Valera.
