MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health has begun monitoring firecracker-related incidents in the country in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

DOH Secretary Enrique Ona said the department is reviving its "APIR" program or "Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction" in an attempt to reduce firecracker-related injuries in the country.

Ona said the department's campaign will focus on children aged 6 to 10. He said based on their record, this particular age group posted the highest number of cases with 274.

The DOH reminded Filipinos anew to use safe alternatives to firecrackers, such as loud music and horns. – report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
