MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The bus segregation scheme along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) will begin tomorrow, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino said on Monday.

Under the scheme, buses will be divided into three categories: A, B and C.

Tolentino explained that A and B buses will use different sets of bus stops to avoid congestion. The C category, on the other hand, is composed of 10% of the number of units of a fleet which will be allowed to use all bus stops.

At the north-bound lane of EDSA, A buses can only stop at Magallanes, Buendia, Guadalupe, Shaw Blvd., SM Megamall, Boni Serrano, Cubao-Farmers and Ermin Garcia.

B buses, meanwhile, can only stop at Ayala Ave., Estrella, Pioneer/Boni, SM Megamall, Ortigas Ave., Main Avenue and Baliwag.

At EDSA south-bound, A buses can stop at Ermin Garcia, Arayat-Cubao, VV Soliven, Connecticut, Shaw Starmall, Guadalupe, Buendia Avenue, and Mantrade.

B buses can stop at Kamuning, Monte de Piedad, Main Avenue, POEA-Ortigas, Pioneer/Boni, Estrella, and Ayala Avenue.

"Theoretically, baka merong 40 % deduction ng congestion sa isang bus stop," Tolentino told dzMM.

The MMDA chief explained that travel time for C buses would be longer since they will be allowed to drop off and pick up passengers at all bus stops.

Tolentino said initially, the MMDA did not grant the bus operators' request that units not using a certain bus stop be allowed to use flyovers. However, the request was eventually granted.

"Kung wala naman daw po silang gagawin, hiniling nila na umakyat sila sa flyover. Ang makikita ng mga kababayan natin bukas, may mga buses na magsi-skip ng bus stop na pahihintulutang umakyat ng flyover pero hindi dadaan ng ilalim," he said.

Tolentino expects that some passengers will be confused by the new scheme. He said the signboards posted at all bus stops and inside buses aim to prevent this confusion.

Traffic enforcers will also be stationed at all bus stops to aid the passengers during the first two weeks of the scheme's implementation.
