MANILA, Philippines – The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has announced that its Baclaran-Monumento (Line 1 system) set a new ridership record last month with more than 15 million passengers.

Engr. Emerson L. Benitez, LRTA Officer-in-Charge, said a total of 15,033,360 passengers took the train in October 2012, surpassing the previous record of 13,559,520 passengers reported in October last year.

Benitez said the 11% increase in ridership is “proof that more people are taking the LRT because it is faster, cheaper and more convenient.”

He also attributed the increase of 1,473,480 train passengers to traffic congestion and rising fuel prices.

Meanwhile, the management of LRTA has appealed to commuters who take the LRT 1 and 2 lines to be patient and cooperate with its security measures.

Commuters are reminded that wrapped gifts will be opened for inspection while baggages exceeding 2 feet x 2feet in length/width will not be allowed.
