MANILA, Philippines - The Manila Police District (MPD) on Tuesday admitted there were lapses in the handling of the suspect in the massacre of a bank executive and two others in Santa Cruz, Manila.
Suspect Nestor Delizalde was shot in the head when he allegedly tried to grab the gun of his police escort inside a van.
MPD directorial staff chief Ronald Estilles said the gun-grabbing incident could have been prevented if the suspect was handcuffed at his back, instead of in front.
"We've been telling policemen to be cautious in transferring detainees...we're planning a vehicle na hindi na magkasama yun suspect at yung escort…We will put him in a cage, tapos nasa kabilang part ng vehicle," Estilles told ANC Headstart.
"Talagang may lapses kasi mayroon na kaming caution…and yet nangyari pa ito so we'll be investigating for lapses."
Estilles maintained Delizalde planned to to escape, resulting in the latter's death.
The Delizalde case was the fourth gun-grabbing incident in Manila this year, which resulted in the deaths of the suspects. - ANC
