Confessed killer claims he acted in self-defense
MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) – The suspect in the killing of Ricky Pempengco, father of international singing sensation Charice, confessed to the crime and surrendered to police Thursday.
Angel Capili Jr. is now asking the Pempengco family for forgiveness.
"Dun ko lang sya nakita sa labas, wala akong plano...nagkasala talaga ako. Humihingi po ako ng kapatawaran ng mga pamilya ni ister Pempengco," he said after being presented to media at Camp Crame.
Capili claimed that he merely acted in self-defense but is ready to face the consequences of his actions.
“Hindi ko siya nasagi, hindi kami nagkaroon ng body contact. Bigla na lang niya ako sinuntok. Nabigla din ako sa nangyari, self-defense ho ang ginawa ko para sa sarili ko naman. Pero gusto ko rin malaman ng pamilya ng naulila, hindi ko talaga alam na anak niya si Ms. Pempengco, kaya sorry po. Handa ko pong pagdusahan ang mga nagawang pagkakamali,” he said.
Capili, a construction worker, gave himself up in General Trias, Cavite province, to a barangay captain identified as Rolando Pagkalinawagan.
He was then turned over to General Trias Mayor Luis Ferrer IV, who then got in touch with the provincial police of Laguna.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa tiwalang binigay sa atin dahil siyempre kaligtasan niya ‘yung isa sa mga prayoridad po natin,” said Ferrer.
Capili was then brought to Camp Crame where Charice and her family were waiting.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo was also present at Camp Crame.
Ferrer said Capili told him he accidentally killed Pempengco.
"Parang aksidente daw po ‘yung nangyari. Hinabol po siya, may hawak na bagay...tumakbo siya," Ferrer said.
Capili stabbed Ricky along A. Bonifacio Road, Barangay Laram, San Pedro, Laguna, last Monday.
A police report said Pempengco was in a drinking session and then left to buy a cigarette.
Capili then allegedly approached him and stabbed him with an ice pick.
Pempengco was able to walk away and then sit on a pavement, but the suspect went back for him and stabbed him again.
Sleeping in bus terminals
Capili said he hid in General Trias for 3 days and went to Manila.
He met with his wife in Baclaran Thursday morning, where he was fetched by Pagkalinawagan to surrender to authorities.
Ferrer said Capili was afraid for his life and slept in bus terminals where he tried to hide.
Robredo said the suspect owned up to the crime and is remorseful. "Siya po ay boluntaryong sumuko. 'Di na raw niya kaya."
From Camp Crame, Capili has been brought to Laguna, where he will be detained.
The Laguna police will file murder charges against Capili.
Meanwhile, officials of Barangay Santiago will reportedly get the P200,000 reward put up for the suspect's capture. -- With reports from Alex Santos, ABS-CBN News; ANC
