Fire hits SM Cubao

MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Fire struck SM Cubao in Quezon City on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said that the fire struck past noon and reached the 4th alarm level as of 12:25 p.m..

It said thick smoke was coming out of the stock room located at the mall's basement, where the fire could have originated.

Several fire trucks have arrived at the mall to put out the fire, the report said.

Superintendent Bobby Baruelo, chief of the Quezon City fire bureau, said they have yet to determine the exact area where the fire came from.

Baruelo said that firemen have been able to enter the mall's storage room after successfully sucking out thick smoke from the basement.

As of 3:16 p.m., the Quezon City fire bureau had yet to declare that the blaze has been put out.

Earlier, a team of fire volunteers from ABS-CBN tried to enter the inner portion of the mall, but failed because it was covered by thick black smoke.
