MANILA, Philippines – The doctors and staff of three major public hospitals in Quezon City held a lunch time mass walkout to protest the proposed privatization of 26 public hospitals in the country.

Doctors and staff of East Avenue Medical Center, Philippine Heart Center and Philippine Orthopedic Center are opposing the two bills in both chambers of Congress seeking to privatize 26 government-owned and -controlled hospitals.

The doctors joined militant groups in a lunch break protest.

They said privatizing the hospitals would deprive poor people of affordable medical services as it would raise fees.

The protesters were referring to House Bill 6069 by Rep. Anthony Rolando T. Golez and Senate Bill 3130 by Sen. Franklin Drilon. – report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM
