Customs seize stingray, shark tails in Manila
MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs seized over 2,000 kilograms of tails of protected species at the Manila North Harbor.
Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon said large quantities of stingray and manta ray tails were found inside a container van on board a ship from Cebu. Tails from various species of sharks were also discovered.
Biazon said the illegal items were consigned to Golden East Marine Export Inc.
The bureau estimates the market value of the illegal items to be at around P10 million.
Authorities suspect that the tails were bound for countries where tails of the said species are believed to fight cancer and impotence. – reports from Noel Alamar, dzMM; and Niko Baua, dzMM
