MANILA, Philippines – A motorcycle rider died after being hit by a Nova Auto Transport bus in Quezon City past midnight on Wednesday.
The unidentified fatality was riding the motorcycle with another man along Belfast Avenue when they allegedly got hit by the Nova bus, driven by Frank Verano.
The motorcycle slid under the bus after the collision.
The two riders were rushed to East Avenue Medical Center. One of them died at around 4 a.m., while the other is in critical condition.
Police did not find any identification cards on the victims. They have been trying to call the numbers from the victims' cellphones but no one was answering.
Verano, 29, claimed that the motorcycle was using the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred.
He was already gone at the site of the accident when authorities arrived. He eventually surrendered.
"Nataranta na po ako, nag-panic...nag-counterflow po 'yung motorsiklo, mabilis sila, pagewang-gewang. Huminto nga ako, pero pag hinto ko tumama sila sa harap ko," Verano said.
However, another motorcycle rider who witnessed the accident, Olivia Gultiano, said she saw the Nova bus racing against another bus.
Verano has been placed under the custody of Quezon City Police District Traffic Sector 2. He could be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury.
Just yesterday, another Nova bus driven by Danilo Ongonion Jr. hit a CEM Transport bus in front of it along East Avenue.
Ongonion and 27 passengers from the two buses were injured in the crash.
Nova Auto Transport topped the list of bus companies with the most number of involvement in accidents last year.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board said Nova Auto Tranposrt was involved in 16 accidents from January 2010 to September 2011. Three people died in these accidents. – reports from Jacque Manabat and Zen Hernandez, ABS-CBN News; and Dennis Datu, dzMM
