MANILA, Philippines – Several members of militant group Akbayan Youth gathered in front of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila on Friday to urge Thomasians to become independent-minded over the Reproductive Health bill issue.

Members of the militant group carried with them placards saying: "Tomasino, matalino. Huwag magpaloko," urging the students not to be afraid in airing their opinions regarding the controversial bill.

The youth group also placed banners on the footbridge in front of the UST campus.

UST, the country's oldest university with a conservative Catholic tradition, has been vocal about its opposition to the RH bill.

The university recently made the news after its official student paper, The Varsitarian, openly criticized professors of the Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University who expressed support for the controversial measure.

The university administration then washed its hands of the attack, claiming that The Varsitarian has always enjoyed editorial independence. – with a report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
