MANILA, Philippines – A retired policemen was killed while a colleague is in critical condition after they were hacked by an ex-convict in Sampaloc, Manila on Monday afternoon.

Retired policeman Nerio Vargaz, Sr., was killed on the spot along Geronimo Street in Sampaloc at around 4 p.m. He was hacked three times on the face, back and arm.

His companion, Police Officer 3 Basilio Ebdane Jr., is seriously wounded after he was hacked on the chest and arm.

Suspect Jomar Vermug, a corn vendor, fled after the incident.

A certain “Emong” said the two cops were in the area to buy illegal drugs. But when they got none, one of them suddenly got angry.

“Kukuha ho ng droga e, wala sila makuha sabi nila sino matapang dyan? Lumabas dito,” said Emong.

Emong added that Vermug was really going after Ebdane but Vargaz tried to protect his friend.

“Sinalag niya kaya may sugat siya sa braso,” he said.

Aside from the illegal drugs angle, authorities are also looking into extortion as a possible motive in the incident. Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
