MANILA, Philippines – A retired soldier went on a violent rampage and hurt a soldier during a demolition attempt at his house inside the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.

Retired Staff Sgt. Proceso Cassoy fired warning shots and hurt Corporal Felipe Saldivar, who sustained two gunshot wounds to his left foot.

Cassoy ran amok after learning that several soldiers were preparing to demolish his house along San Francisco Street in Katipunan Village, Barangay Western Bicutan.

He claimed that the soldiers fired back.

Saldivar, meanwhile, was rushed to Fort Bonifacio General Hospital for treatment.

Cassoy's family is one of the 800 families allegedly occupying a 10-hectare land owned by the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Cassoy fired shots anew after the police arrived at the area to arrest him. Some soldiers tried to continue the demolition, but retreated again several minutes after.

The soldiers eventually stopped operations to ensure the safety of other residents.

Cassoy claimed the soldiers are demolishing the houses one by one to avoid a massive confrontation between the residents and the demolition team.

Police said Cassoy is facing frustrated homicide and direct assault charges. – reports from Henry Atuelan, dzMM; and Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
