36,100 BuCor inmates to receive PhilHealth cards

MANILA, Philippines – Over 36,000 inmates were given assurance of health services following the new memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

Under the MOA, the BuCor shall fully subsidize the premium contributions of some 36,100 inmates.

The beneficiaries of the program are the inmates from New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City; Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City; Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro; Iwahig Prsion and Penal Farm in Palawan; Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Letye; Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte; and San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm Zamboanga City.

According to BuCor director Gaudencio Pangilinan, the agency has allotted P36 million for the initial implementation of the said program.

PhilHealth president Dr. Eduardo Banzon, meantime, said the program will not only benefit the inmates but also their families. – from a report by Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
