MANILA – The group behind the People’s Initiative signature drive will hold an anti-pork rally at Luneta on Monday.

In an interview on DZMM on Sunday, Peachy Rallonza-Bretaña of the Scrap Pork Network said this will mark the start of collecting signatures for the campaign. The group is hoping to get 6 million signatures by December.

However, Bretaña added that they are willing to extend to January or February if ever they do not meet the goal in time.

“Ito po ay umpisa ng pagkuha ng signatures para sa People's Initiative,” she said. “Ang target po ay sana by December makakuha na ng 6 million, o kung ‘di man, pwede po kami mag-extend hanggang January o February bago i-submit.”

The campaign was launched last Saturday in Cebu, and was supported by representatives of religious communities.

According to Bretaña, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines and Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines supported the draft presented by the group.

The People’s Initiative aims to revise the definition of pork barrel, wherein the President possesses discretionary powers of the lump sum funds.

“Ang tinatanggal, [ang] nilalathala po doon sa People’s Initiative, is yung definition ng pork barrel na iisang tao lang ang nag-dedesisyon kung kanino at san mapupunta,” she said.

The signature campaign will be conducted in various public places within the year.
