MANILA (UPDATED) - Operations of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) were suspended anew after the railway system encountered technical problems at noon on Saturday.
MRT spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera said passengers were asked to disembark from the trains after the MRT encountered radio communication problems at around 12:05 p.m.
He said the MRT cannot resume operations until the two-way "constant and continuous" communication between the train operators and the control center is restored.
As of 4 p.m., operations of the MRT were still suspended as the communication system remained down.
"Only the train drivers are able to transmit messages... So there's a problem dun sa transmission ng ating control center. And this is vital kasi it's part of our safety protocol," Cabrera told ANC.
"Without that, automatic shutdown tayo," he added.
He said their technicians and experts are still trying to repair the system, which they hope to be restored by 5 p.m.
"The objective is to bring back the operational status ng ating communication system before 5 p.m. because ito yung peak hour natin," he said.
Just last week, an MRT train crashed through the barrier at the Taft station in Pasay after being uncoupled from a second train that was pushing it, leaving over 30 people injured.
