MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III continues to trust Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Alan Purisima amid reports of the rising number of crimes.

Speaking to reporters, Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the government is doing all it can to stop criminal elements. He said this includes the stricter implementation of the registration of firearms.

Asked if the President continues to support Purisima, he said: "Nandoon pa ang pagtitiwala ng Pangulo kay PNP (Philippine National Police) Chief Director General Alan Purisima."

Coloma said the government is in the process of modernizing the equipment of the police.

He said the criminal justice system is also being strengthened to show that violators of the law will be punished.

He appealed to the public to coordinate with the police.

“Patuloy 'yung pagkilos ng ating pamahalaan para tiyakin ang kaligtasan at kapanatagan ng ating mga mamamayan. Isa sa mga mahahalagang elemento dito ay 'yung pakikipag-ugnayan ng kapulisan sa mga komunidad,” he said.
