Flags at half mast for Robredo
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE 2) - Flags are now being flown at half mast in Malacanang grounds and several government offices for the late Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, Jr. is now drafting an order directing all government offices to do the same.
A similar directive is also being implemented in all Philippine National Police camps and in Manila public schools and city-run offices.
In a statement, PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome said: “All PNP camps are hoisting the national colors at half mast as an expression of our great respect to a great man and a good leader who steered the DILG-PNP family through the straight and narrow path of proper public service.”
The Department of Education (DepEd) has also said that flags in all DepEd offices and schools nationwide will be hoisted at half-mast until Robredo is laid to rest.
In a statement, Sec. Armin Luistro said, "With deepest sympathy, the DepEd family joins the nation in mourning the passing of untiring public servant DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo."
Robredo, Luistro said, was an icon of good governance and faithful stewardship.
Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim likewise ordered all flags in the city be flown at half mast for one week.
“Manila joins the whole country and the family of Secretary Robredo in mourning. Lahat tayo ay nagluluksa sa pagyao ng isang opisyal na nagbigay ng malinis na serbisyo-publiko para sa bansa,” the mayor said.
He said Robredo died in the line of duty.
“If it’s any consolation, maipagmamalaki ng kanyang pamilya ang makabuluhang serbisyo na kanyang ipinamalas na dapat pamarisan ng lahat ng naglilingkod sa gobyerno. We lost a good man and a good public servant today,” Lim said.
In Naga, yellow ribbons were tied around trees and posts in behalf of their former mayor.
