MANILA – Five detainees at the Taytay Municipal Police Station escaped before dawn on Monday but were recaptured.

Police said the escaped detainees were Florendo Ocampo, Henry De Leon, Christian Dave Lipar, Jonathan Ruiz, and a minor.

Ocampo, De Leon, and Lipar, aged 36, 28, and 21, respectively, are all facing drug-related charges. Ruiz, on the other hand, was in jail for attempted murder.

Police investigation revealed that the minor, who had been in police custody for some time due to theft but was not placed behind bars, took the key from the office of the jail guard, PO2 Manuel Fang-asan, while the latter was inside the investigation room.

Investigators said the detainees may have persuaded the minor to steal the key and unlock the jail.

The minor and the four detainees were eventually recaptured after the girlfriend of one of the detainees helped the police, according to case investigator SPO1 Arnold Timan.

Due to the incident, Fang-asan and jail warden SPO1 Federico Pampuan were relieved of their posts. – report from Kori Quintos, ABS-CBN News
